             Many times in the business world the roles and descriptions of Managers and Leaders get confused and blurred. For every person who is asked a different answer will be given. Many think that they are the same. It is not till someone takes a closer look at the roles they play do they find that there are distinct differences. Some of the differences are subtle and others are very striking. The following are some of the major differences between a Manager and a Leader. A successful manager is able to maintain a balance of both.
             One of the major differences between a manager and a leader is the attitude toward the current direction of company or “Status Quo”. A manager tends to be more adherent and resistance to any change. The philosophsy of “There is not a need to reinvent the wheel” mentality is common. It is not until there is a problem is there any effort on the part of a manager to change. By that time it’s too late, you are in a reactive state. Leaders are the opposite. They are proactive
             Leaders tend to look at better ways of doing a certain task. They look for ways to improve any number of factors even is there is not a problem. A pro-active approach to problem solving is a common trait among leaders. With this, they inspire the people under them to do the same. Reinventing the wheel to make it easier to make or faster rolling is their mission.
             Another major area is with respect to the employees under them. Typically managers tend to be too busy to spend time with the people under them. They will get status reports and pass them up the organizational chain. The personal time and interaction does not exist. A leader on the other hand tends to care and motivate their employee. Asking them to go above and beyond the job description the human resources brand them with. Leaders understand that in order to make a difference in the company they must depend on their colleagues.
