stem cell Research
The greatest discover in history to date is the research that is being done on stem cells. Stem cells will someday be the answer to many incurable diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, cancer, diabetes and heart disease just to name a few (AAA/ICSiii). Brigid L. M. Hogan states, that one fertilized egg has billions of cells and hundreds of different cell types, this is what produces a human being (1). All through our life, most tissues continue to generate new cells, to replace those lost either by wear and tear or because of high demand within our bodies. This cell generation occurs in adult tissue such as the skin, hair, bone marrow and intestines. The ability of a tissue to renew and repair itself depends on a small group of cells known as stem cells (Brigid L.M. Hogan). There are three different sources for stem cells: Embryonic stem cells that come from a very early embryo such as in vitro; embryonic germ cells, also know as fetal stem cells, most coming from abortions; and the last being the adult tissues. There is a lot of controversary within the religious community about the standards of how the embryonic stem cell and fetal stem cells are obtained. These gr
The results showed that their coordination was better and sections of the damaged brain had been destroyed (qtd. These researchers say there needs to be more work done before transplanting into human therapies, but they are very excited about multiple sclerosis treatment in the future (1). Significant work has been done on laboratory rat's concerning spinal cord injuries. Scientist argues that the very delicate stem cells of the embryo, offer so much more for research than any of the other stem cells. Fox who is in his forties and has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. Some diseases of the nervous system have nerve cells that die, and the mature cells within our bodies cannot replace them. Christopher Reeves, the actor of superman fame, is a big advocate for embryonic stem cell research on this subject because of his spinal cord injury that led to paralysis. Our tissues turn over constantly and there must be cells that remember the form of the original organ" (James L Sherley 47). More than half of the patients either had their sight restored or saw improvement (qtd. The utilization of both fetus and embryos is very useful in stem cell research, which ultimately could lead to effective cures for so many diseases and related conditions. Research says that one may be persuaded towards abortion if it is considered to be for a good cause, such as medical research (qtd. Over the last ten years, some interesting things have happened with the study of the adult stem cells. The same researchers studied male patients who had died after heart transplants, (using woman hearts) found that the Y-chromosomes migrated into other cells of the heart. A 1995 study by the Joint Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto found that, 17 percent would be more likely to go through with the abortion for these medical reasons.
