Evaluation of an iq test

Evaluation of an IQ test : Analysing the Reliability and Validity of the PsygatThis study involved the examination of a newly developed intelligence test, the Psygat, in order to assess its reliability and construct validity. A group of 268 psychology students, with an average age of 22.37 were asked to complete the Psygat tests after completing two other intelligence tests, a Culture Fair test and a Verbal IQ test. The results of the Psygat were then analysed for internal reliability through a split half analysis based on age. The construct validity of the Psygat was examined through the analysis of the test scores against the other two intelligence tests. The hypothesis that the test would show significant internal reliability as well construct validity when measured against the other two tests was supported, although inconsistencies with the Culture Fair IQ test were detected for the younger age group. It was concluded that the evidence suggests that the Psygat is a test that could be validly used as an assessment of verbal intelligence, but further investigation is required regarding the tests use for the assessment of culture fair parameters.

It is hypothesised that the results of the Psygat will correlate significantly with those of the two other tests, thus showing significant convergent validity, and will also show strong internal reliability. Materials : Three Intelligence Quotient (IQ) tests were administered to the participants - a Verbal IQ test, a Culture Fair IQ test and the Psygat that is the subject of this reprot. Validity was stronger when compared to the Verbal IQ test than the Culture Fair test indicating that the test is more reliable as a test of verbal ability than as a test of pattern recognition and spatial intelligence. Overall, the scores of the Psygat were signficantly correlated with both of the other tests. Psychological testing: principles, applications and issues. The major limitation of this study relates to the use of Psychology students as participants. The significant correlation of the scores between the younger and older age groups suggested that the absence of any bias relating to age. It is possible that some bias could have been present relating to this area with 205 of the 268 participants being female (see appendix B), which is in line with the average percentage of females in psychology classes (Dalziel, 1996). The Psygat test contained 55 verbal items, but for the purpose of this report was reduced to 18 analysed items using the mean proportion correct and the corrected total item correlation.
