Shrek
How is the film shrek different to a In this essay I am going to be talking about the film Shrek and how it is different to a traditional fairytale. There are many differences between 'shrek' and stories like Cinderella and Rapunzel, but there is one part at the start of the film that shows that this film isn't going to be usual. What happens is that Shrek is heard reading from a book that has a story like what people think of traditional fairytales to be. Then Shrek says "yeah like that'll ever happen!" During the film you will see that a lot of 'fairytale' creatures have been forced out of their homes and into Shrek's swamp. Shrek is angry and he and donkey set off to see Lord Farquad about the problem. When he arrives he is told by Lord Farquad that he will get rid of the creatures if Shrek retrieves Princess Fiona from a castle surrounded by boiling lava and guarded by a fire breathing dragon. This is exactly like in many fairytales, where the prince must rescue the princess from a castle. But Shrek is not really a prince charming and t
Donkey tries to stop Shrek from interrupting the weddingbefore the priest says, 'does anyone have a good reason why these two people should not be married?' This is a reference to T. Shrek is not unhappy because he and the princess had fallen out when he misunderstood the princess and donkey talking about her being an 'Ugly Ogre'. One of his knights brings in a magical mirror. This phrase has been in many fairytales and is a traditional place for princesses to be when they are needed to be rescued. Then Shrek stops the wedding and marries Princess Fiona. They fly off on the dragon (from earlier) to stop the wedding. Princess Fiona is not at all impressed with Shrek's appearance but as the film goes on you will see that the princess grows to love Shrek, which is also a lot like some fairytales, were the princess or someone like that does not like the person but after a while they grow to love them. In this essay I have pointed out the humour, the references to modern life and references to traditional fairy tales in Shrek. When nearing the end of the film you see the princess going off with Lord Farquard to get married as Shrek had promised. One example is in Beauty and The Beast, when the prince is turned into a beast under a spell. There is a scene where her and Shrek are walking through the woods when they meet Robin Hood. Donkey asks Shrek where the princess will be, Shrek knows that she will be in the highest room of the tallest tower. In fairytales there are many examples of when people are put under a spell to look ugly. As I said before the princess is quite independent and is nothing like what you would expect from a fairytale princess.
