Are the arts, namely music, dance, visual arts, etc., so vitally important to student’s education as to receive as much emphasis as mathematics, science, reading and other mainstream subjects? The speaker gives an affirmative answer to this question. However, although I agree that the arts play a very important role in human society as well as our daily life, I think the speaker’s claim that they are as important as the mainstream subjects has carried it to an extreme which I can hardly agree.

Secondly, for an individual to survive in our society, he has to invest his time and effort in the area that he has the best talent and the most potential. And sociology has told us that one can only pursue need in this category only if he has satisfied his basic needs belonging to the first category. The former consists of our need to feed, to be clothed so as to keep warm, to have a residence that protects ourselves from unrelenting weathers and other potential dangers. Therefore, it follows that there cannot be too many students can afford to invest too much of their time and effort in the arts; for most of them, it only remains as recreational activities. that are most important for these kinds of activities that directly satisfies our basic needs in a society; therefore, it justifies the importance these main subjects currently receive. Therefore, the importance of arts can never be underestimated. However, determined by the nature of the arts, one has to have very special talents in it to be successful because an artist with mediocrity is hardly needed by the society and thus can hardly survive. By studying arts, one can develop good aesthetic discernments, which better enables one to better appreciate the world and the people in it. This category of needs characterized the dominant amount of human activities in a society – agriculture, industry and commercial activities, etc – in short, the economic activities. etermined by the most basic needs of its constitutional units -- individual human beings.
Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that the arts play a very important role in human history and our modern society. Therefore, it is not surprise that there are substantially less art activities in our society, and this inherently determines that the arts courses cannot be the mainstream subjects offered in a school and college. It can also foster more tolerance and mutual understanding among people from different culture, race and religion, which in turn can bring more harmony and peace to our world.
