Child Called It
In literature, we sometimes meet authors or characters that we respond to on a personal level. Their work reminds us of events that may have taken place in our lives or give us visions of the way we wish to live our lives. I was able to relate to Dave Pelzer's book, A Child Called It. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was severely abused emotionally and physically by his alcoholic mother, who played cruel games with Dave, which left him nearly dead. While growing up, my life didn't consist of such harsh mental and physical abuse, as did Dave's', some of the incidents that occurred in his life reminded me of the emotional duress I faced throughout my childhood. In Pelzer's book, Dave's character experienced every child's worse nightmare. His youth was cut short and he was forced to take on the role of an adult. Though I wasn't robbed completely of my childhood, I held bigger responsibilities than most eight-year-olds. After he gained consciousness, he went to his father for support and his response was, "Well. A good piece of literature has a lot to do with being able to relate to what the author is writing about. Our environments were different, yet similar in the sense that we both shared a lot of the same emotions, concerning the unstable situations we dealt with. Reading this story has helped me realize that having faith, you can overcome any of life's obstacles. On March 5, 1973, Dave Pelzer, at the age of 11, was finally free. Dave Pelzer continues to write about the obstacles in his life in his sequel, The Lost Boy, which talks about his life as a foster child. you better go back in there and do the dishes. My mother lived in fear, while my father inflicted emotional pain on the entire family. A teacher at his school that had seen Dave before, finally came forward about the marks she witnessed found on his body, the torn, raunchy clothing he wore, and the spoiled scraps that he was forced to eat that even the dogs refused to eat. My mother also made that same promise to my brothers and I that life would only get better for all of us.
