Poverty in Literature
Hi guys, as you can probably already see, my seminar is based on my topic of research which was exploring the theme of poverty in different works of literature. I studied four different texts, two books and two short stories. The first book I studied was Angela's Ashes, which I'm sure, or hope that all of you are pretty familiar with! Is there anyone that still hasn't read the whole book?? Well anyway, once I got into the book I found it pretty interesting and yeah, it's filled with themes and plenty of examples so that made it pretty easy to use for my report. The second book was a novel called Oracles and Miracles, which was about twin girls growing up in the 1940's in Spreydon, so it was pretty cool to read, because I knew where all the streets they talked about were and other suburbs. Once again, it took me a while to be able to get into this book, I never really did fully, but what I read was really enjoyable. Uh one of the short stories I read was called The Red Sari, this was about the street beggars in India, the narrator gives a good outside view on these peoples lives and I was able to find a few good examples to contribute to my report! The final text I used was another short story called Big Brother, Little Sister. I e
She gladly accepts, soon realising she will have to explain. Upon doing this he also gets himself a job writing nasty letters for 'the money lender'. Another effect in this short story I found really crazy was missing limbs. Not having sufficient clothing, no underwear at all, and their shoes always being in a terrible condition also affected the characters health. Once again the missing limbs came up. At one point, the narrator describes a baby on the street as being 'rapped in rags we'd line a dogs kennel with'. Seems like a really irrational action to take to overcome poverty, but yeah I guess I'll never know unless one day down the track I find myself in the same situation as the characters in this text! So yeah, I think I have pretty much covered most of the main points from my report and I hope that you guys weren't too bored, hopefully you guys have more of an idea on some of the effects and outcomes of living in a life of poverty, and thanks for listening! J. An example of this is the mother having badly ulcerated legs, which play up occasionally, especially on hot days, and prevent her from being able to attend to daily chores. In the novel Oracles and Miracles the characters also suffer illness throughout the novel. Matters weren't helped when Malachy finally walked out on family, leaving them with no income at all. This was probably the text I found hardest to find examples and things from for my report, but I got there in the end. Right from the start of the novel we are introduced to illness when "adored only daughter" Margaret Mary died during infancy. Now, I based my report on the following key questions: 1. And I have a wee quote for this point.
