de-institutionalization

Many mental patients in Canadian institutions have become totally institutionalized and segregated from society. This institutionalization of patients who do not necessarily pose much of a risk to themselves or society at large have resulted in enormous amounts of money being spent that could be better directed towards outpatient and other social programs. More money can be allocated to half way houses and remedies of that nature which will help integrate these mentally ill back into society and give them a chance to be productive. As you can see not only will deinstitutionalizing mental patients save hospitals money it will also put an emphasis on more proactive solutions to mental disorders as well as giving the mentally ill a chance to contribute to society.According to the CPA (Canadian Psychiatric Association) the primary goals of deinstitutionalization are "to enable patients to live in the community while meeting their clinical and social needs" (http://www.cpa-apc.org). Acute cases must be treated differently as people with these inlness' may be a danger to themselves in society if deinstitutionalized. While deinstitutionalized patients will be able to fulfill these needs by socializing with people who are not mentally ill; this may be therapeutic to them. With this being said deinstitutionalization also only seems beneficial to those who are not severely mentally ill. Deinstitutionalization seems particularly effective in the treatment of children as it allows them to experience a much closer to normal development. Allowing children as close to normal development is very important as this is the stage in which all humans develop a sense of morality, cognition, and perception.
