Obesity Surgery
2. Vertical banded gastroplastyIV. Vertical Banded Gastroplasty Surgery Morbid obesity means being overweight to the point where you are prone to disease. You are considered to be morbidly obese if you are more than double your ideal body weight or more than 100 pounds overweight. Research shows that in 1998, 55 percent of the adult American population was estimated to be overweight or obese (Insel, pp. 302). Due to the fact that obesity causes a lot of health problems, many adults are seeking to have obesity surgery to assist them with their weight loss. . . .
As with gastric bypass, aftercare is very important. Patients will be on a liquid diet for two weeks. surgery is an operation that reduces or bypasses the stomach or small intestine so that morbidly obese people can achieve significant and permanent weight loss. In a longer follow-up study, it showed that 24% of patients had become morbidly obese again (Homan). The healing process is gradual therefore patients should expect to wait a while before fully enjoying the results of liposuction. Eating too fast and too much can cause nausea and vomiting. Patients age 55 and older experience more complications than younger patients. Patients will spend 1-5 days in the hospital if there are no complications and will have several weeks of recovery. It is wise that they eat slowly and not overeat after surgery. It should never be viewed as a cure to obesity. This complication can be treated with oral supplements; but sometimes conservative treatment is not effective and long-term complications may result. No more than 25 minutes should be spent on eating a meal. Vertical banded gastroplasty is performed under general anesthesia, through an incision in the upper abdomen measuring several inches (Homan). There are also several risks of complications with vertical banded gastroplasty surgery.
