A farmer and his wife & Pretty as a flower
The work that families are involved in, their economic circumstances and their personal relationships are central to both stories, no matter what culture those people belong to. Money sometimes can be a seed of evil, bring only injustice, conflict or dissatisfaction for someone; however, sometimes money dose mean everything for someone. In this two stories, some people reflect on a lifetime of work and the changes in their lives, others have to face unemployment and ethical decision that they have done. Furthermore, after reading two stories, I can appreciate common things about money, work and land in both stories.
‘ A farmer and his wife’ is one of the best stories I have ever read before. It is quite interesting when I first read through the whole story. The husband and his wife, 2 main characters, with the totally different personalities, but lived together since they were around 18 of their age. Everything has been significantly changed in the last several decades of their life, except their personalities, they still keep their characters, even they try to change it, but it seems impossible. Take ‘a framer and his wife ‘ for example, with lots of money and wealth, but without children around them, life is meaning nothing for them. Even she knew that that girl stole five dollars, she still turned a blind eye. For that pretty girl, she gets her new job by using her magic power-beauty. She can understand that, because she wants her children having a good life. Life is keeping going on, she still has to go to do some farm work with her husband, just like before, even she said she thought her husband was not care their children. In order to repay her boss, she vows that she will work like a mule for the rest of her life for her boss. In order to find a good job, her children leave her alone, and go to somewhere to earn their lives. Because beauty is a powerful advertisement, she earns a lot for her boss. Life for him is just simple like that. Because he is a monk, he learned a lot from that, which makes him not very interested in money. The whole large field is waiting him to plough. For husband, he has another understanding of money and work. However, seems her beauty dose not work properly this time, even she promise that she will ‘sell’ herself to someone who can rescue her. However, she starts to steal five yuan again after one day off. Firstly, he argued that he did like his children and he did care about them, just he showed in another way.
