Ulysses

Critical Response to the poem “Ulysses”.

The poem Ulysses suggests that some life experiences cause us to change so much that we are unable to live our lives the way they once were. In this poem, Ulysses explains how going back to his old life is unfulfilling, and he can’t stop thinking about his adventures away from home. He feels useless, as if he is unfit to be King because he does not want to be back home. He has been away for twenty years, and he has been through so much, he finds himself longing for the excitement of it. He thinks that if he stayed in Ithaca, even as a King, he would be wasting his life. The experiences he has endured in these twenty years, has changed him so much, he is unable to go back to his old ways

Many people go through changes that leave them incapable of returning to their old life. In the case of Ulysses, he was used to being thrown into the unknown, living a life of chaos. It was something he loved, the thrill of battle, the adventures with monsters, and the awe of learning. He fought in wars, he saw many new places and people. He too

. . .

Even if he goes back to the bachelor life, something will be different. He knew he did something he loved and could not help wanted to change his life back to that. These things happen and we must carry on whether it is what we wanted or not. He spent twenty years of his life traveling with his comrades. Ulysses’ experience left him yearning to leave his old life, or to have never come back to it. In most cases this mark will change the person, and change their life, even if only in a small way.

It is unlikely that a person would have such things happen outside fantasy, but the feeling at the outcome can be the same. It was right for him at one time, but now he has changed. The unpredictability of battle was exiting to him, He describes it as a “delight”. Would he have been better off without going through his journey? Only the Gods know. To feel useless, to yearn for what you used to have before this life changing experience. They would yearn for their old life, like Ulysses did his. Even if they have to change their lifestyle. Ulysses was unhappy with his old life, and he could not carry on as he did, so he left on one final adventure.

Everyone has had an experience in their life that left a mark.
