My Big Fat Greek America
Joel Zwick's, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is making all the noise in dinner conversations of Greek American households. To the average person this romantic comedy is like all others, but to Greek Americans it is a documentary of a typical Greek family in the United States. It has all the elements of a normal romantic comedy but adds a little twist. It is the typical girl meets guy, girl falls in love with guy and girl marries guy with a little extra. It's more like Greek girl meets "xeni"(strange, foreign, not Greek) guy, Greek girl falls in love with xeni, family doesn't accept guy because he's not Greek, girl struggles with situation but ends up like all the rest; girl marries guy.Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) is 30, single, Greek, and is a waitress or should I say seating hostess in her family's restaurant, Dancing Zorba's, in Chicago. All her father Gus (Michael Constantine) wants is for her to get married to a nice Greek boy. "A Greek women's job is to marry a Greek boy, make Greek babies and feed everyone till the day they die". But Toula is looking for more in life. Her mother (Lain
To Greeks, culture and religion play the two biggest parts of life. The Greek population in Chicago is enormous making the city the perfect place to set and film the movie. She meets Ian Miller (John Corbett), a teacher, and a dreamboat that she had made a fool of herself over at the restaurant; they date secretly for a while before her family finds out. Stars like Vardalos, Constantine, Kazan and Corbett make the characters of this film seem like they are in a home video, each making a personal connection with the character they are playing and their understanding of the Greek culture. This may be one of only a few countries in the world that doesn't mind the mixing of cultures through Holy Matrimony. Ian had to convert to the Orthodox faith due to Nia's Greek customs and to her church customs. Greek or not, people can relate to this romantic comedy. Everything from the plot of the movie to the music in the background makes this film what it has become in our America today. This movie has brought laughter and fame to the Greek community in America. The movie continues through the twists and turns of family problems but finds itself at a perfect ending with perfect harmony. The best way to get to know Greeks is through their culture and lifestyle and that is what the plot of this movie does for "xeni". I am very rich to have both Greek blood and an American home. This all-star cast makes it a must see film. He has to learn to accept Ian; Ian has to learn to accept Toula's huge family which is unlike his "dry toast" family, and Toula has to learn to accept herself.
