             Bharati Mukherjee's "A Father"
A Father, a story by Bharati Mukherjee, is about an Indian man, Mr. Bhowmick who moved from India to the United States with his wife after marriage and was not happy with it. Moving to the United States was his wife's idea. Mr. Bhowmick had a great job in India but his wife insisted on moving to the states. This story shows why moving to the United States was not a good idea and compares his life in the United States to his life back in India, which he was satisfied with.
Mr. Bhowmick has a daily routine that he goes through everyday. He wakes up at 5:43 A.M. and wakes his wife two minutes later. His wife didn't have to be at work until 8:30, but she liked getting up early to make her husband a big breakfast every morning. While she cooked his breakfast, Mr. Bhowmick brushed his teeth and showered and recited his prayers which were extremely important to him. Back in India, Mr. Bhowmick had a room just for his gods and goddesses so he could pray. But unfortunately he didn't have an extra room for prayers since he was also living with his daughter. His wife normally shouted from the kitchen, "Hurry it up with the prayers". His daughter, Babli, twenty-six and electrical engineer had the other bedroom in the apartment.
One day when Mr. Bhowmick skipped a day at work, because of a superstition. He got in his work to go to work, he put his key in his ignition and his neighbor sneezed. He believed that a sneeze at the start o a journey brings bad luck. He went inside and sat in the living room watching TV. He made a shocking discovery; his daughter was in the bathroom throwing up. He thought of many reasons why she could be throwing up but he knew she was pregnant. That was an embarrassment to his family to have a child before marriage. Babli didn't tell her father she was pregnant even though he knew he kept it a secret....
