gA Lesson Before Dyingh is a famous book written by Ernest J. Gaines. The story is set in a small Cajun community in the late 1940s which is a background with racialism between white and black. The author characterizes each characterfs mentality in their situation; give up as hopeless, sense of inferiority, being selfish, and those whom putting too much hope on othersc The lives have no choice, or have to alternative something important in their life. Jefferson learned to care others instead of complaining others. Then he accepted Grant, talk to him and do what he say to him is right. Jefferson got locked in to the cell by the courthouse to waiting for his execution date. He gets mad but he still going by himself, he can drop the foods to feed the fish like he said but he didnft do it, by this hint, we know hefs changing. After they know the execution date, Grant do all the things he can do to please Jefferson. school teacher, understand thoroughly what he want and what everyone else want from him, hated the situation he facing, hated to do things he donft like to do but have to do. Grand asked by his aunt and Miss Emma to make Jefferson a man before he dies, Grant refused to do it but he has no choice, he must to do it because his aunt controls him. He disappointed from the people, abandon him to despair.
