Stepping out of the Ordinary

Lying on the beach, absorbing the rays, listening to the crashing waves, and being completely relaxed, is the way most of us picture a vacation. Taco Bell on the other hand sees taking a vacation as being at their restaurant. For example, an advertising slogan stated "Take a Taco Bell Vacation." Though over the last twenty years, Taco Bell has changed their advertising slogan many times. Some of their advertising slogan revisions included: "Run for the border", "Yo quiero Taco Bell", and their latest, "Think outside the bun". With every new advertising slogan, new meanings and interpretations are formed. These new meanings and interpretations can range from ambiguous or misleading information, targeting certain audiences, and creating new advertising purposes.
In the early 1980's, Taco Bell had an advertising slogan that stated, "Take a Taco Bell Vacation." To understand this advertising slogan we must first look at a few facts. First of all, what exactly is a vacation? Merriam-Webster defines a vacation as, "A respite or a time of respite from something", basically a break. Secondly, who are they targeting with their advertising slogan? Are they targeting the busy business person who needs a break from their job, or are they targeting people that need to step out of the ordinary. Though this advertising slogan is ambiguous, it gets the message across that all people should take a break from their schedule to relax, and try something new and uncommon. This advertising slogan was effective due to the time period in which it was used. Taco Bell had not been around for long and they were still somewhat of a new restaurant, so this advertising slogan's main purpose was to get new customers of all types to try something new and different. Over time though, this advertising slogan lost its effectiveness, so a new one was created.
