             Common Misconceptions about South Dakota
             You know you're in South Dakota when your excuse for getting out of school is that the cows got out. When people from far away places come to South Dakota, the questions they ask are quite amusing. I moved to South Dakota from North Dakota when I was very little so that would make me a true "Dakotan," since North Dakota has many of the same common misconceptions. I have myself experienced these confrontations and it baffles me how clueless people are about South Dakota. People assume that we get offended by all of the false impressions when actually we find these jokes just as humorous as they do. When people think of South Dakota, they think of a place where technology and new trends have not quite set in yet. The misconceptions of this "unknown" state are boundless. In this paper I hope to prove all misconceptions of our great state wrong.
             The first and most common misconception people have about South Dakotans is that we are not as technologically advanced as the rest of the world. People are surprised by the fact that we have computers and cell phones here, and it blows their minds that we actually know how to use them. I actually had someone come up to me once and ask me if I had ever watched television. This just seems funny to me. Why wouldn't we have televisions? It's not like we are poor or incapable of operating a machine so complex.
             South Dakota has some of the best Universities to offer college students. We have some of the best schools for computer engineering, business, and tech management. The advantage South Dakota colleges have over other colleges is that the student to teacher ratio is much smaller and gives students a better chance to understand something they might be having problems with. Education is South Dakota's number one priority, and that is important in itself.
