Whitman has an idea of who he wants to read his poetry. With Emily Dickinson I felt like I was sneaking in on her inner thoughts and invading her privacy. Where as Emily expresses this loneliness and sadness of yearning for connection that she had never found. One could find many different aspects of nature in Whitman and Dickinson's poetry. Dickinson expresses that she can feel a higher power by going into her garden and to Whitman everything around us God is apart of. Dickinson never intended for anyone to read her poetry. throw random words around and Walt Whitman tells little stories within his poetry. While reading Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" I felt as if I were reading messages he wanted me to know about. She wrote as if her poetry was a diary only for herself to read. She wanted to express her own thoughts not caring if anyone would ever read them or not. Whitman gives this analysis of his life that he wants other individuals to explore. With Whitman I want to learn more of what he knows and with Dickinson I want to relate to her feelings. Both Whitman and Dickinson seem to feel that one could find God everywhere besides by just going to a church. He wants his writing to effect individuals and to send them certain messages. .
