Miss Emily
Miss Emily was robbed of a proper childhood growing up because of her father and his child-rearing techniques that he used while raising her. The way that an individual is raised has a lasting effect on how they live their day-to-day life. Emily had a very close relationship with her father, and this was mostly due to him being the only man in her life. This lack of another man in her life made accepting her father's death very hard for Emily. She refused to believe that her father was dead and would not allow anyone in the house to dispose of the body. Many people would think that behavior like that was unacceptable and that she was crazy for believing that her father was still alive. However, Emily's fellow townspeople expected that type of behavior from someone that lost their father. One townsman stated, "We did not say she was crazy then. We believed she had to do that. We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had rob
After a while this is when the smell started coming from Emily's house. This went on her whole life so that by the time Emily was around thirty years old she was still single, and had never had a man in her life other than her father. Emily's father believed that their family was more prestigious than the other families in town, and naturally this belief was handed down to Emily so that she began to think the same way. She was the only one that ever went in there and she slept with Homer's body for years until she passed away. Emily's family did not believe that Homer was worthy of Emily because he was just a day laborer. If she killed him and no one knew about it she could have him there with her all the time and he could never leave her. Some people probably put two and two together where as others just thought Homer left late at night and that is why no one ever saw him leave her house. The townspeople thought that the relatives might have scared him off for good or that he was getting ready for Miss Emily to move up north with him where they would be married. Any man that would come around to see Emily was driven away by her father. One night Homer was seen coming back into Emily's home but no one saw him leave. When Emily met Homer and fell in love with him she wanted to make sure that he would not leave her all alone like her father did. Emily and Homer Barron would be seen around town on Sunday's riding together in a buggy. Emily became attached Homer very quickly, and everyone in town thought that the two of them would get married, but after Emily's relatives came into town Homer left.
