Analysis of an extracted Soap
Analysis of an extracted Soap segmentThis assignment will be as a result of "Language and Media: Broadcast" to show what I learnt from this unit. Several approaches of language analysis of broadcast media have been taught and discussed during the unit such as the Semiotic approach, Conversational analysis, Identity and social relations and so on. This paper will analyse a genre of broadcast media by use some appropriate techniques and will demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical principles of the use of language in the broadcast media at the same time. It is presented by illustration of a famous soap segmentX Friends (from Channel 4) through analyse its script. In this analysis, I will analyse its process type, vocabulary, conversation situation and the like by using two approaches 1.Representation 2.Conversational analysis. Almost analysis of the text will be "chronologically", as it comes. In the end, I will sum up some sort of conclusion about what I found in my analysis and how this contributes to an understanding of the text I have analysed. The focus of representation is upon on how events, situations, relationships, people, and so forth are represented in text
Monica is the Actor and others are the Patient. 1 Process types The grammar of English differentiates the following process types: Action, Event, State, Mental Process, Verbal Process (Fairclough 1992a, Halliday 1985). Every scene has its own Actor and Patient. " Phoebe asked Monica whether she decided who to sing songs in the wedding party, then, said "I'm kinda musical". Analysis The structuring proposition is concerned with how events and relationships and situations are represented so that we should be draw attention with the clause, a grammatically simple sentence used by a term linguists. The situation of this conversation is Rachel exits into the hallway just as Ross is coming up the stairs. There are many metaphors in this soap text. (Person or thing affected by action; the Actor does something to the Patient). This is a behave of self-mockery after Chandler failed sex with Monica. " "Ross: Yeah? I was good at the stuff huh?" "Rachel: Uh-hmm, uh-hmm, yeah, yeah, I really liked your hands. ), though at the same time it ignores many of the features which a linguistic description would attend to. The text can be more easily to understand after analyse it. Verbs of thinking, perceiving or feeling. I can use many aspects to analyse it like to analysis the conversation situation and process types of it. 1 Dispreferred responses Dispreferred response is someone is not will to answer or talk about something in a conversation.
