The 1960’s was a special decade, not just emotionally but musically as well as politically. The early 1960’s there was a slow beginning of protest songs but the escalating war in Vietnam made more musicians write songs with a message. It was a time of war, sex, drugs, rock and roll and most of all movements that helped shape the latter years of the twentieth century. Music was one of the major ways that people united to make a difference, and try to change their society. The war in Vietnam was a major international issue during the late 1960’s and within the United States the struggle still remained for civil rights and woman’s rights. In 1969 Woodstock brought a half a million people together for three days of peace and music. After everything that happened in the 1960’s, Woodstock showed the people of the United States that peace was still a possibility and it was ultimately the music that brought them together. Today’s society it is somewhat a glimpse of what the 1960’s were, we are at war and there seems to be an upheaval in society. Protests are taking place, not at the same interval as in the 60’s but people are showing that they want to be heard and that their government is not listening. Many people feel that our

If you look into the ideas of the new generation, they do not think everything through billowing clouds of smoke. The music was a savoir to many of the troops, in Vietnam it was a rock ‘n’ roll war there are movies such as Good Morning Vietnam, Apocalypse Now, and Platoon, that have portrayed Vietnam in this context.

It seems to be the escape that many Americans needed in the 1960’s as much as they need it now in the twenty-first century during such hard times of war. There is the presence of war and a government that is out for itself, yet you can go and escape for three days and forget the world and enjoy the music. Which is also one of the issues today with the war in Iraq. This song seemed as though a forewarning for them one of the most symbolic songs of the 60’s. These lyrics truly affected the people and made them really listen.
