Working Education
School was engineered to serve the economy and social order. It wasn't made for the benefit of kids and families, as those people would define their own needs. School is the first impression children get of organized society. Like most first impressions, it lasts. At the time of the education act in 1870 it was argued that the expansion of state provided elementary education was vital to Britain's economic and industrial progressThe dynamics that make forced schooling detrimental to healthy human development aren't difficult to spot: the work in classrooms isn't significant work; it fails to satisfy real needs pressing on the individual, it doesn't contribute to solving problems encountered in actual life. Schools train individuals to respond as a mass. Boys and girls are drilled in being bored, frightened, envious, emotionally needy, generally incomplete. A successful mass production economy requires such a person. Our economy is managed or driven by people who believe the difference between Coke and Pepsi is a subject worth arguing about.The consequences of a repetitive curriculum have still not filtered through. Capital as the expansion of value increasingly becomes all that there is - on an historically progressive scale within its own social universe. (Willis, 1977) Some parents of 'the lads' "share their sons view of the situation" which emphasises the educational failure within many classes. Those people who are unable to provide computers, books and a quiet study area are unavoidably going to underachieve. The attraction of a new revised and more open curriculum is that children will know why they're being taught what they're taught because the curriculum will be driven by utility. It is supposed to shape each man to an adequate level for playing a part in this world game. "The lads" have a counter school culture, which possesses a number of characteristics to distinguish themselves from the "ear'oles'" and symbolises the "struggle over authority". To the extent that our high school graduates are illiterate or ill-prepared, they have become that way because of the incompetence or lack of foresight of the adults who oversee their schooling. No matter what type of education we consume, there is no guarantee that we have actually learned it, despite tests passed and degrees earned.
