Charlotte Brontë and Jane Eyre

             In the novel "Jane Eyre," the writer Charlotte Brontë protests against events similar to what she experienced in her own life. There is a clear autobiographical parallel between Jane Eyre's life and Charlotte Brontë's life. Five years after Charlotte was born her mother died. Similarly, Jane Eyre becomes an orphan when she is very young. Both attend religious institutions with poor facilities and unhygienic conditions. At Cowan Bridge Boarding School Charlottes sisters Maria and Elizabeth catch typhus and subsequently die. Jane Eyre's friend Helen Burns dies in Jane's arms. After leaving their boarding schools both Jane and Charlotte become governesses. However, the biggest similarity between Jane Eyre and Charlotte Brontë is their criticism of people who use religion as an excuse to act harshly. In Charlotte Brontës' school, the proprietor had clearly used religion as an excuse for strictness and selfishness. In the novel, this person is represented by Mr. Brocklehurst, a cold-hearted man who is very judgmental.
             Charlotte Brontë writes the novel like an autobiography in first person narrative so the reader can relate and sympathize with Jane Eyre. Charlotte Brontë shows how abused Jane Eyre's childhood was by using characters like Mrs. Reed and her children. From the moment Mr. Reed dies, Mrs. Reed who promised to take care of Jane rejects her. Jane is abused and beaten constantly by her cousin John Reed. Charlotte Brontë uses phrases like "bad animal" to show how badly Jane Eyre was bullied by her brother. After being hit by a heavy book thrown by John, Jane involuntarily attacks John in order to protect herself from further harm. She is blamed unfairly for the fight and thrown in the red room as punishment. This incident affects Jane so much that she has a fit from the grief and terror.
