Music: A Political Stage
Throughout history, the music of the era has oftentimes reflected political ideology and trends. In American culture, arguably the first notable instance of musical politics surfaced in the Vietnam era, where songs such as Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Give Peace a Chance by John Lennon, and War by Edwin Starr were released, and forced the American people to question the purpose of the war across the globe (Anderson). Bands encouraged peace rallies, sit-ins, and any form of anti-war and borderline anti-United States government rebellion. Thousands of adolescents, often dubbed as "hippies," flocked to their respective artists' events, hence supporting the anti-war mindset, and made the roots of a potential social chasm. War riots and anti-Nixon uprisings were common as American involvement in the war was charred with implied defeat in 1975 when the North Vietnamese finally overtook the south, after the removal of American forces in South Vietnam (Public Broadcasting Station). Regret and ill-spirited feelings only worsened, as Vietnam veterans were mistreated, and anti-government feelings often worsened. NoFX, now producing under Fat Wreck Chords, and very anti-war and anti-Bush record company, recently released an album entitled The War on Errorism. Hopefully, the music community of America will someday become more balanced, and open their eyes to the truths of the nation. Sadly, not enough people pay attention to politics, and are therefore easily influenced by any given slander concerning the topic. The analogy of an insane man shouting hypocritical rants from a soap box comes to mind. A group of bands this size, with their respective following is quite impressive. Their music was less censored, and they could be promoted through "rock clubs. Leftist groups like Punk Voter and movies like Fahrenheit 9/11 doubtlessly influenced thousands of swing voters and with the general public unwilling, and in some cases unable to research the given topic themselves, it seems to be a grim situation. Together, these programs cover over 82 million Americans 65 and older. On a different note, a NoFX song entitled Please Stop Fucking my Mom was previous released with vulgar lyrics such as "I didn't care you fucked my sister. Most of these more popular bands have made their political views known previously, whether in their music or in person. As an amateur, also known as underground, you could not legally record, but could perform locally. " Another NoFX release entitled Anarchy Camp incorporates terror-esque lyrics including "rules of anarchy camp: reckless abandonment, random acts of dumbness will be rewarded," and "not much fun 'til someone gets hurt. Radio is especially censored, starting mainly in the 1950s.
