The Stranger, a book writing by Albert Camus is very much base on a character who’s actions in our society cause him problems. Mersault’s differentiation from the majority and society created many different conflicts in his life and eventually lead to his death. Mersault was the type of person who didn’t care much about anything. He always did and said what he felt like and what was on his mind. It’s is unfair how his actions lead to his death when he meant no harm by any of them. Mersault failed to follow the customs and the traditions of society. The first example of this in the book is during his mother’s funeral. In his society it is wrong to smoke during the one’s funeral, yet Mersault didn’t seem to care and smoked anyway. Mersault also didn’t care about the fact that his mother died. People thought this was weird. It is shown that he didn’t care because he didn’t even cry at her funeral. It was clear that Mersault didn’t care about his mother’s death because the next day after the funeral he went for a swim and slept with a girl called Marie, who became his girlfriend. Even though it sounds like that is not a crime, to the society around him it seemed like the biggest crime. The prosecutors and the judge saw this differently in his murder trial, later on in the book, and it caused them to find him guilty which led to his death. He talks to him about God and how Mersault should believe in God and the fact that he should spend his last few moments of life thinking about God. The court did not want to hear that he actually did kill the Arab because that would make them feel obliged to kill him. Mersault was a person who didn’t care what people thought and when he said that he didn’t believe in God the impression that people god eventually led the court to find him guilty and led to his death. The society does not want someone who is different than the majority to live among them. Mersault was offered a job in Paris because he was very good at his job and he turned it down. Maybe many people believe in God because they feel pressured by society and by the people around them. He said he was used to his regular routine that he didn’t want to change anything. Another way that Mersault couldn’t live up to society’s expectations is when it comes to religion. Why should he pretend that he cares about his mother’s death and pretend that he cares about getting married and getting a good job when he doesn’t? Whey should he lie about something that he thinks happened by accident and he thinks he shouldn’t get blamed for? Why should he live up to society’s expectations and not his own? The only answer that Mersault found was that society is what really matter. Mersault replies to this by saying that he has no time to waste on God. Later on in the book, Mersault kills an Arab man and went to trial for it. His honesty and indifference and beliefs soon got in his way and lead to his death.
