obesity- designing a program t

In this report I will be looking at the problem behaviour of obesity and describing the creation and introduction of a community-based program for behaviour change in the Jamaican population. This program will be a primary level prevention approach and will be called the ‘No Gain No Pain’ program, focusing on diet and physical activity. First I will give an introduction to the problem of obesity worldwide, then a literature review will follow focusing on diet and physical activity and the health risks of obesity. Next will be the description, introduction and evaluation of the program. For the purposes of this report obesity will be defined as an excessively high amount of body fat in relation to lean body mass measured in terms of a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI). A BMI of 30 and over is considered obese. It must be noted that much of the information presented in this report will be cited from sources outside of Jamaica due to lack of, or insufficient information on this topic.

Fat provides a form of energy and energy not used is stored in fat cells. The Ministry of health will be asked to sponsor program and provide assistance in terms of resource personnel. The reasoning here is the increases in body weight after age 29 commonly occur with aging is attributable primarily to fat accumulation. For all developing countries combined, the per capital consumption of beef, mutton, pork, poultry, eggs and milk rose by and average 50% per person between 1973 and 1996(Chopra et al, 2002).

Participants will then be taught how to make better dietary choices, how to read food labels, how to start a program of physical activity. The energy that remains is stored as fat in the body.
