Religion in Schools

1984 states that, "it is requireed [sic] that religious clubs be permitted in public schools if other clubs which were also not related to the curriculum were already allowed" (Cline). Students who participate in these clubs or activities must be allowed the same resources and facilities as students not participating in them. Students may not be discouraged or encouraged to attend these meetings, their attendance must be completely voluntary. On July 12, 1995 president Bill Clinton gave a speech to a high school and said that "nothing in the first amendment converts our public schools to religion-free zones or requires all religious expression to be left at the schoolhouse door" (Cline).
             In 1995 the Department of Education issued a set of principles stating what was prohibited and what was not prohibited in public schools regarding religion. Before these principles were distributed to schools all across the U. S. many schools and teachers were confused about what they were able to allow.
