The Country of Costa Rica

             One of the world's most lush tourism spots in Central America is Costa Rica, situated between Nicaragua and Panama. Costa Rica's national name is República de Costa Rica and the religions there consist of Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Jehovah's Witnesses, and other Protestant.
             Costa Rica is a country that is extremely exceptional in its region of the world bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and having a terrain of coastal plains separated by rugged mountains. Costa Rica with a population of around 3,956,507 has a total landmass of 51,100 square kilometers, making it slightly smaller than West Virginia. The climate is tropical, though in the mountains, such as Cerro Chirripo, La Carpihtera, and Eila Costena, the climate is slightly cooler. However, some of the natural hazards in Costa Rica are occasional earthquakes, hurricanes, and frequent flooding of lowlands. Costa Rica with its seven provinces, Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia, Limon, Puntarenas, and San Jose, and its capital city of San Jose, has a unique history, culture, and economy.
             Costa Rica's history consists of numerous different events. Costa Rica gained its independence on September 15, 1821. Historians categorize Costa Rica's history into the colonial period, early independence, the third period (1890- 1920), and the fourth period (1921- 1950). Each period had a tremendous impact on the growth and culture of Costa Rica. In April of 2002, Abel Pacheco who is a psychiatrist won the presidential election held and is still the president. And in May 2003, several national strikes took place, by energy and telecommunications workers over privatization, and by teachers over their salaries.
