Marriage is an ancient institution that binds people into the most basic of social groups, the family. Until the Council of Trent, in 1563, marriage in Europe was conducted in private with an exchange of vows, dowry and the physical consummation of the union, a common law marriage. After the Council of Trent, those Catholic nations, required a priest and witness where as non catholic nations fallowed suite and created marriage laws, that required a minister or witness. Largely due to other sources of influence that leads to heterosexual marriage decline. The opponents of gay marriage also correlate same sex marriage with low marriage rates and high out of wed lock birth rates. According to social scientists who study Scandinavia's , predominantly Sweden and Norway, marriage practices derives that the decline in traditional marriage after the first or second child, is related to the social consequences of equating marriage to same-sex marriage legislation . Many of the opponents of gay marriage reflect similar arguments of 19th century opponents of mixed race couples, that it is against God and nature. By diluting the institution traditional marriage with gay marriage leads heterosexual couples to have a more liberal view of marriage, which leads to the consummation of marriage in totality. The dangers of gay marriage lay in a perceived impact on societal marriage systems. The justices felt that the product of such a mixed race union would cause infertile or weak and mongrel children. The critics conclude that same sex marriage increases the cultural separation of marriage and parenthood, which inevitably leads to the dissolution of the institution of marriage. However correlating same-sex marriage legislation and heterosexual marriage decline dose not conclude that same-sex marriage is the causation of heterosexual marriage decline. Some scholars believe that these elements added with a large underclass population and high divorce rate will be the termination of marriage in America. Also the elements in Scandinavian society, contraception, abortion, working women, secularism, and welfare, that play a part in the evolution of marriage are present in American society. Those in the early 19th century argued that interracial marriage would produce similar results. The definition of what is a natural marriage, who decides whom may marry whom has been debated in our society since the very begining. small minority, from the very beginning.
