Thomas Aquinas

Although there are many who may not know Thomas Aquinas, the works he contributed to the world are so very important. Even though he only lived for fifty years he was still able to produce over sixty works. He is considered one of the greatest theologians and philosophers of the Christian and Roman Catholic thought. In the days before Thomas Aquinas studies took place exploring questions of philosophy and theology. Universities, mostly existing in Western Europe, were trying to understand and explain God's revealed truth but yet include man's reasoning. This time of great Christian thought was known as "Scholasticism". Scholasticism followers were to consider every side of a question logically and rationally. Thanks to scholastics there have been sophisticated procedures developed to investigate philosophical and theological questions. The Universities, were too many, an unshakable, rational theological construction of a Christian society. Faiths were shaken when ancient Greek writing began to poor into Europe. After great thought he produced "Summa Theologica". Aquinas busy life soon caught up with him. The second part of his work deals with man's final end, and with virtues and vices. The Dominicans, fearing Aquinas's mother would take him away, sent him to Rome. The "Summa Theologica" is a systematic exposition of Christian thought. This could be damaging for the Universities hopes of constructing a Christian society. As Aquinas became almost famous his life became almost unmanageable. Towards the end of his life ecstasies became more frequent and very distractive. Soon after that Aquinas ceased work on the "Summa Theologica". Thomas was born of a noble family in Roccasecca, Italy, near Cassino. Aquinas "Summa Theologica" is one of the most important writing of the middle ages. He said "like so much straw compared with what I have seen and what has been revealed to me. The Summa Theologica" contains Aquinas five ways to prove the existence of god. There is one account at Naples in 1273, three brethren seen him lifted in ecstasy, and they heard a voice coming from the crucifix on the alter. doubt revelation and undermining faith.
