Abigail Williams

             Abigail Williams, and orphan and unmarried girl, is the least complex character in The Crucible. She has simple motivations and is clearly the negative, evil-minded character in the play, and the leading force behind the witch-hunt. She told lies, manipulated her friends and the entire town, and eventually sent nineteen innocent people to their deaths. She is spiteful, and threatens the other girls if they disobey her. She loves seeking revenge and the Salem witch trials allowed her to do exactly that.
             Abigail was suspected of committing adultery, because of her affair with John Proctor. This caused a conflict between Abigail and John's wife, Elizabeth Proctor. Simple jealousy was Abigail's motivation to have revenge on Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail wants Elizabeth out of the picture, so that she can have John all to herself. At the beginning of the play, Abigail along with some other girls, were caught doing witchcraft out in reverend Parris's field. Abigail was the only girl who did witchcraft with intentions to kill or hurt someone, including Elizabeth proctor, by drinking charms and potions. Abigail cannot seem to fathom the fact that John is not willing to leave his wife for her.
             When Abigail's stature rose, a lot of things changed. Abigail changed many people's thoughts on who was to be blamed for witchcraft. Along with that, innocent people's lives were changed, because of Abigail falsely accusing them of witchcraft for revenge. She dramatically changed Elizabeth and John Proctors relationship as husband and wife. When Elizabeth discovered that Abigail Williams and John might be having an affair, she immediately fired Abigail. Elizabeth's concern about her husbands changed her inner goal of always being honest, by lying to the courts about John and Abigail's relationship, in hope to save her husbands life.
