the crucible
How Does Arthur Miller Create Tension Throughout Act 3 of The Crucible? The Crucible is set in Salem in 1962. During this time Christ was strongly believed in and played a great part in people's lives. Witchcraft was also a major issue and people were afraid of this. If witchcraft was claimed to be nearby the surrounding community would escalate into a riot until the witch had been destroyed. This is an example of what happens in the Crucible. The story begins when reverend Samuel Paris discovers his daughter Betty, his niece Abigail William and their friends along with His slave Tituba, dancing in the woods around a fire and chanting, he also saw one of the girls running around naked. The day after Betty, Paris's daughter and another of the girls, who are petrified about what they have done and fear what may happen to them appear to fall ill as if making themselves into victims of the groups actions. After all of the events that have took place the village soon begins to talk of witchcraft. The girls involved realise how serious things are getting and begin to panic. They argue about the real truth of what happened that night. Abigail Williams who acts as the group leader is horrified when the other g
At the beginning of each Act the audience find themselves asking various questions. "Danforth warns Mary off at the beginning of her speeches, and implies that he does not believe what she is saying. They feel sympathy for her as they can see she is getting a hard time, at this point you urge her to continue. The tension builds as the audience sympathise towards the proctors especially Elizabeth as she has just supported the story of a woman who cheated with her husband and who she despises. " Giles shows desperation for the truth to come out. There is the question whether or not the judges are trying to protect their pride aswell. " The evidence draws nearer as proctor is discredited by the court for working on a Sunday. However, all this is shattered when Paris points out that all of the petitionists have been arrested. The character knows the truth and wants to share it just like the audience know the truth. The audience wonder if there is any chance at all. The fact the proctor stated that his wife will never lie create tension as the audience begin to realise that Elizabeth cares for her husband and may lie for him. The start of act 4 once again, like act 3 shows a great contrast from the ending of the previous scene.
