Reflections

What is diabetes mellitus? Although to the general population diabetes means not eating sugar, the disease is far more complicated than it appears. Diabetes affects many vital organs in the body if blood sugar is not kept in control. Heart disease and blood vessel problems, blindness, kidney disease, infections of gums or skin are some of the serious health problems caused by untreated high blood glucose levels. Stopping before eating or before going to bed to check a blood sugar is an inconvenience, but the individual has to think about the long term consequences. A literacy work which thoroughly explained diabetes to me is Kim G's Taking Diabetes to School. Diabetes struck me at the age of nine. Walking down the dark hallway, bouncing from one side to another, losing my consciousness but unable to do anything about this state terrified me as a child. I felt I would never wake up and had no idea what was happening to me. Unable to awaken to full consciousness, I was trying to pull on lines hooked to me. Later I awoke thinking I heard my great-grandmother's voice and realized I couldn't move. All sorts of ideas circled through my head. Suddenly, I remembered the trip dow

Intensive care unit had excellent care. I don't know how long it took for a nurse to hear me, but it seemed like days. I became a real pro nurse at an early age, or at least I thought so. Normal blood sugar is 70-120 mg/dl. The doctor prescribed drinking lots of Sprite for a diagnosis of simple virus. The disease was not my fault or anyone else's. The most important thing a diabetic can do to protect long-term health is controlling blood glucose levels. The next step the book explained was taking insulin shots. Next on the agenda was learning what to eat and what not to eat. Why should we question the integrity of a doctor? Taking Diabetes to School explained diabetes to me. This requires the checking of blood sugars at least four times a day, maybe more if complications arise. My pancreas just quit working for no known reason. The correct amount of insulin will help to prevent high and low blood sugars.
