Romeo and juliet

Shakespeare and Luhrman make the audience focus on the conflict in their versions of the text. How?

Both Shakespeare and Luhrman make the focus on conflict in their versions of text by showing the differences of 2 houses, general hatred of foes and family disagreements. Shakespeare wrote the original “Romeo & Juliet” script and play and Luhrman modernised it into a movie that would appeal to the audience in our time, but still keeping quality of the original text.

In the beginning of Luhrman’s film, before a shootout at a petrol station between the Montagues and the Capulets, a newsreader is reporting the prologue of 'Romeo and Juliet'. The newsreader then fades out and the viewer is shown empires, belonging to the Capulets and Montagues. This is meant to show you that the reason for the Montagues and Capulets rivalry is down to the business empires, belonging to the two families. In the Shakespeare’s play, we are not exactly sure why they are enemies, the prologue had only described it as; an “ancient grudge” (feud) between these two families has now developed to "new mut

An you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets, For my soul, I’ll never acknowledge thee, Nor what is mine shall never do thee good. This eventually ended up with Tybalt killing Mercutio (dear friend of Romeo) in a later showdown, Romeo slaying Tybalt for revenge and the entrance of Prince as he declared that Romeo is to be banished.

In conclusion, this is how Shakespeare and Luhrman make the audience focus on conflict; through the competition of both houses, the violence created by the servants and children of the 2 families disrupting the people and piece of Verona, the arguments between a father and his daughter when disobeying his wish, and all this ends up with the death of the innocent after what they have done.

Refusing her father’s wish of marriage to Paris because of her love for Romeo led to great grief. iny," involving "civil blood", a reference to increasing violence and conflict between the two families on Verona's streets. This hence shows the hatred of Romeo to Tybalt and Tybalt to all Montagues. “If he is ever again found in Verona, that hour will be his last” (Act III Scene I Lines 192-202). ”(Act I Scene I line 64), Luhrman emphasizes this by switching the camera shots and close ups to make the arguments more frantic and suspending. Juliet explains that should her mother not delay the wedding by months or even weeks, then she will find another dead body like Tybalt's (Juliet will kill herself), “Delay the marriage for a month, a week. Capulet again declares his authority on the marriage issue, threatening to throw her out onto the streets and to disown her should she disobey and then leaves, “Graze where you will, you shall not house with me.
