Shakespeare wrote the original “Romeo & Juliet” script and play and Luhrman modernised it into a movie that would appeal to the audience in our time, but still keeping quality of the original text. In the beginning of Luhrman’s film, before a shootout at a petrol station between the Montagues and the Capulets, a newsreader is reporting the prologue of 'Romeo and Juliet'. The newsreader then fades out and the viewer is shown empires, belonging to the Capulets and Montagues. This is meant to show you that the reason for the Montagues and Capulets rivalry is down to the business empires, belonging to the two families.
