Campus=FREEDOM (?)

One of the popular issues around these days is whether we must let hate speech or not on campuses. It is a very sensitive subject and requires insightful approach. In my opinion we should not outlaw, censor, and/or punish any form of expression including hate speech on campuses since doing so, as Lawrence points out in his article, is contrary to the democratic sprit of tolerance, additionally adjacent to the fundamental principle of a university: “open expression” which is also an essential piece of democracy and causes disputes among people for the reason that there are no formulas to apply in distinguishing hate speech from speech which we consider as okay.

Since democracy is the form of management which combines different ideas with the aim of getting the best result for humanity, we must show tolerance to those different ideas. Likewise “The democr

atic system cannot be operated without effective opposition. The administrators on campuses decide what speech can be heard or read, but there is a thin, flexible line between hate speech and normal speech.

“Who decides what speech can be heard or read by everyone?” says Nat Hentoff (page18).

“Open expression is the fundamental principle of a university. If we continue to censor hate speech we will be drawing more attention to the subjects classified as hate speech and people will do their best to test the limits of censorship. Also universities are the elementary pieces of democracy because if we do not get different thoughts from universities it will be harder for us to apply democracy. It is hard to make a distinction between them because how to distinguish them is a subjective matter, there are no set of laws to follow during that decision.

“… I am troubled that we have not listened to the real victims, that we have shown so little understanding of their injury…” states writer Charles R.

In conclusion, we should not outlaw hate speech. once we start to declare certain things “offensive”, with all the excitement and attention that will follow, I fear that much ingenuity will be exerted trying to test the limits.
