Nicholas II

             Up to the end of the 19th century, Russia was an autocratic country. It was ruled by and autocratic Czar who ruled as he liked, and controlled everything. Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov was the Czar from 1896-1917, and his rule was that of political disarray. The Russian Revolution began in February of 1917. There were many causes that led to this, but what were Nicholas' II contributions to the start of the Russian Revolution?
             Nicholas II contributed to the Russian Revolution in many ways. One of the ways was the poor treatment of the serfs, or "slaves". They worked on the estates of the nobles, and the nobles could punish them in any form. They could even sell them as chattels.
             One colonel said of the serfs, " These were the most unhappy people in all the Russian land, who less resembled people then working cattle, from who inhuman strength was demanded in their labours, one might say, without any reward... when I saw these people for the first time at the works, I was struck by the following: each person, before passing me, bowed, so that his back to a horizontal position; then, with mincing steps, he hastened up to me, seized the cloth end of my cape, kissed it with the words, "I kiss you, pan colonel", and withdrew in the same position."
             The serfs had no freedom under this autocratic rule. They had to
             do what they were told, live where they were told, and even marry the
             people they were told to marry (Crankshaw 70).
             Nicholas not only allowed the ill treatment of the serfs, but also took the leadership of the whole Russian army and went to war against Germany, which was the beginning of World War I, while his wife took control of the country. While he was controlling the army at the front, people in Russia suffered from severe shortages of food, fuel, and housing (Wikipedia Encyclopedia).
