America's rejection of soccer

In Europe, Asia, and South America the World Cup (the world wide soccer tournament held every year) is one of the most anticipated events of the year with extremely loyal fans. Notice how in the previous paragraph in the listing of sporting events the World Cup is not mentioned at all. We as Americans love things that are fast paced, flashy, and filled with action. It seems as though soccer just doesn’t fulfill our need for physical violence. Because the two games are similar, they have the same kind of appeal. Each belongs to the family of games whose object is to put a ball in a goal. The two sports are too similar for them both to succeed. Also the origins of basketball begin in the United States and a country as patriotic as ours is more likely to choose a home grown game instead of importing one from another country. To me it seems like Americans are extremely concerned about accomplishments of individuals and soccer just doesn’t fulfill our need to put people in the lime light. People in the United States are obsessed with violence when it comes to T. In football throwing people to the ground and hitting them as hard as you can is a huge part of the game. Of course if the post game fights of soccer hooligans where exclusively televised I’m sure that would be hugely popular in the US. Now don’t get me wrong soccer can be faced paced and flashy from time to time but not nearly enough to draw the attention of America’s eyes.

Another obstacle in soccer’s rise to popularity is basketball.

An additional explaination to why soccer might not be the most popular sport in the states is that soccer is not a very violent or physical sport at least compared to American football and hockey.
