The 21st century has begun, and the world is filled with English. We must admit the fact that English is becoming the world's language of the 21st Century. English is now the second most widely spoken language in the world, with only Chinese spoken by more people. English is becoming the most studied second language for those whose native language is not English. English is the official language of the European Central Bank and the language of the Asian trade group ASEAN.
Many centuries around the world is incorporating English into their country. The Germans are promoting English as the language of the 21st century, with lessons for children as young as six. Germany's leading newspaper produces an eight-page English edition and declared, "English is going to be the lingua franca of the next century." Switzerland has three official languages, German, French, and Italian, plus a fourth language spoken in one canton, Romansh. However, Switzerland recently adopted English to be taught as the second language of choice, rather than one of its official languages. The students are not little kids anymore. The classes are made up of both motivated students, and non-motivated students. It would be a big disadvantage for the students in the future if they stop studying English. This means that the university needs to provide extra time and teachers for them. Why waste time and money to these students without motivation to learn English? Why force students to learn what they are not eager to learn? No matter how hard University tries to make them study, the students are not interested in it. This means that the total of 80% and more of the companies are using TOEIC scores, or thinking of using TOEIC scores to be one of the elements to judge for the job accession. I have asked fifteen students in my 英語文化事情class, and eleven of them answered that the requirement system that we have now is not providing us with the education we need. Abolishing the requirement system will make a better environment for learning in the class. Forcing students to do what they are not motivated in is meaningless. ity of the students are forced to study English until they graduate from college. They know the importance of learning English. However, it seems like the system is not working.
Just like other colleges in Japan, our University is making English classes required for graduation.
