THE CATCHER IN THE RYE

In the novel, Te Catcher In The Rye, by J.D. Salinger Holden is facing many troubles. He is first of all in trouble in school and has been kicked out of two so far since he gets bad grades and he can’t discover ho he really is and what reality is. He needs to find out what life is all about because since his brother, Allie died he has changed and can’t face reality. J.D Salinger uses very good symbolism throughout the book to show how Holden is and what he wants life to be like.

The first symbolic thing is the title of the book, The Catcher In The Rye. It is first mentioned when Holden sees a kid walking on the road singing the song by Robert Burns, “Comin Thro’ The Rye”. That song represents that it is alright to lose you innocence. Holden substitutes the word “catch” for the word “meet” in the song so he makes the song say the opposite of what it really means. It is supposed to mean that it is okay t

. . .

Holden really wants to keep the young children out of child hood, but he does not realize it is impossible. The ducks go south during the winter but they do come back, Holden now thinks about how vanishings like Allies are not permanent. Holden loves going to the museum and admires it. Holden finally faces reality and realizes how life is even though he does not like it. When Allie was around everything was good and normal, then he died and everything changed. He just wants his fantasy life to be real where no one changes and there is no conflict. “I was wondering where all the ducks went when the lagoon got frozen over and icy”(13).

The next symbol in the novel is the Museum of Natural History. Holden is curious about these ducks through the whole book. The pond is also a metaphor because it is partly frozen and partly not frozen just like Holden’s transition between childhood and adult hood. The ducks in the pond show Holden how life works and how things can not be the same, what also connects to the transition between Holden’s childhood and adulthood. Holden needs to and finally starts to face reality and how things happen even though you may not want them to. The museum is the same always just how Holden wants the world to be. He enjoys how it is always the same.
