THE FINAL BATTLE

The entire season has led up to this. Each and every minute I’ve spent in a gym or outdoor court has led me to this moment. Tonight I will either be a champion or second best. It’s the game of my life; tonight I play for my league championship.

We arrived that evening at Corvallis High School with only one thing on our minds: a championship. The bus pulled up to the gym and my stomach began to tense up as if I was ready to throw up everything. My palms began to perspire so much I had pools of sweat in my hand. My legs were rubbery and my throat extremely dry. I stood up and took a cool breath of fresh air into my lungs and started exiting off the bus toward the arena that I was to play what could very well be my last game as a high school senior. As we made our way to the court I could already imagine the crowd with their intense shouting of pride for their teams and the announcer calling the starting line ups. The court itself felt like a trampoline with new springs, springs that could make you fly to the sky. This was where the battle of warriors would take center stage. I pictured my opponents and their attempt to stop my team and I form achieving victory.

Upon entering the locker room, the sense of dirty towels

. . .
My commander told me “this is it” and “it’s all in your hands, Sean. This continued on for twelve minuets and then they gained a foothold on our defense and a fifteen-point lead at the halfway point in the war. We all knew that the final battle would be fought today and we will either be victorious or dead. As we entered to the battlefield the crowd rose to their feet screaming words of joy at the top of their lungs.

The prize was presented to us and when it came time for me to hold the trophy I began to cry and then I said to my team “we are the only ones who deserve this championship. We had all their moves and strategies stopped before the even made them. At the end of the third period the score was even. I left my troops for them to fend for themselves and they kept us with three points of the enemy. I returned to the battle with one minute left on the clock. I had my mind made up that we would win or die trying. The creaking noises from the court floor singled to me that was all the strength this court had left to hold the weight of the final battle. We struck to the defense with quick pass to an open man who made a nice move to the hoop for a score. I would have to be sat down for two minutes.
