“Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson is a poem about a wealthy man who unexpectedly commits suicide. The structure of “Richard Cory” allows a steady build-up to the surprise ending in the last line. Hughes also utilizes personification the speaker says the river has a face and the river also asks the speaker for a kiss. Through these poetic devices Hughes allows the reader to experience what the speaker is experiencing. Both Hughes and Robinson achieve this purpose through their poetic devices. Unlike Langston’s poem “Richard Cory” is told this story through the eyes of someone else. ition of the “k” sound in all three lines “The clam, Cool face of the river Asked me for a kiss.

Although both Hughes and Robinson use different techniques the same over all effect is achieved. Robinson uses rhyme to help his story flow. Poetry is an advanced form of literature that allows the reader not only to see the experience but also to become involved in that experience. The first fourteen lines prepare the reader for the last two, with their stunning realization that Richard Cory has committed suicide. ” this repetition of the “k” sound allows for the poem’s flow like the flow of a river.
