Multinational Corporations

             Multinational corporations are businesses that extend outside of their own country, whether they are located throughout the world or only in a couple other countries, they are considered multinational. Many factories of North American and European companies are located in third world countries in order to decrease expenses by capitalizing on the low wages and lax regulations which are present in other countries. The issue over multinational corporations is a very controversial issue. Many people are disgusted with how these businesses treat their workers in third world countries and the state in which the workers are working in, while others think that the businesses are doing the people a huge favor by giving them a job. In this report, we will deal with the controversial issues of child labor and sweatshops within multinational corporations, and also look at them in the light of a Biblical view.
             For about one hundred years, companies have been moving offshore to cut down on the expenses so they can stay competitive in the developed countries. Many of these offshore factories operate sweatshops and child labor. A sweatshop is
             a workplace where workers are subject to extreme exploitation, including the absence of a living wage or benefits, poor working conditions, and arbitrary discipline, such as verbal and physical abuse. The word "sweatshop" itself was originally used in the 19th century to describe a subcontracting system in which the middlemen earned their profits from the margin between the amount they received for a contract and the amount they paid workers with whom they subcontracted. The margin was said to be "sweated" from the workers because they received minimal wages for excessive hours worked under unsanitary conditions. ( Luo, n.d., pg. 1)
