Motherhood
In the world today, the term "motherhood" has come to mean solely the act of having and raising a child. In fact, a mother is any individual who performs nurturing acts toward other people or animals. Motherhood resides in the spirit, not in the being.An ancient African religion believed that every living being was neither wholly male nor female, but androgynous, with all aspects of their God and Goddess. These ancient Africans also believed that every living person and thing was gynandrous, having a female aspect that comes from the mother that gave it life. The quintessential example of motherhood comes from Charlotte Perkins Gilman's novel, Herland. The women of Herland are all considered to be mothers without even giving birth to a child. These parthenogenetic women mutually raised and cared for all of the children and each other. "To them the longed-for motherhood was not only a personal joy, but a nation's hope.
