There is always something new that people want to find. Some people like to find new clothing styles and others like to find different foods to try. Above that, there are a select few who strive to find new scientific ideas. Working in the medical field, Sigmund Freud always tried to advance in every area he studied. Freud was a curious man with a lot of determination throughout his career in medicine even though many of his ideas were widely criticized. . Sigmund Freud was born in the town of Freiberg, Moravia, on May 6, 1856. When Freud was born, he had a caul, an extra layer of skin, on his head. Thought to signify happiness and fortune in the baby's future, the extra layer also resembled fame. In addition, his mother took him for a walk in his carriage one day, and an old peasant woman looked at the baby, then to his mother and said that he "would one day be a great man" (Klagsbrun 8). Such goods words remained in his parent's heads and they took generous pride them. These prophecies furthermore led Freud's parents to believe that they had a very talented child; therefore, they treated him as a favorite child from that point on. However, the unconscious mind holds secret wishes in the back of a persons mind that only come out when then conscious mind is weak, or dreaming (Baker 90). Later on, Freud heard that Carl Koller, who studied the eye, followed Freud's works and realized that cocaine was safe to use as an anesthetic for the eye (Baker 59). With the belief that each person has a mental illness to some extent, Freud became interested in how hypnosis was supposed uncover hidden thoughts in a person's mind and help mental problems. Freud went more into depth with love and sex and different parts of the mind in "The Ego and Id" (Baker 181). Eventually Freud was able to get into the person's mind and find the core of the mental illness, also known as psychoanalysis (Klagsbrun 59). His memory made school miraculously easier, which gave him more opportunity to attain other interests. When Hans was grown up, he came to Freud and personally thanked him (85). If being "psyched" was so infective, how would one explain why Freud was with patients all day long and receiving requests to travel around the world to help other people in need. Once, a father brought his mentally ill son, Hans, to Freud to be psychoanalyzed. Freud wrote a book about his findings, but was not pleased with it because he felt that the everyday reader would not find it clear (Klagsbrun 120). At first Freud defended his works like he said he would, but eventually realized that he was in the wrong and admitted to not researching what would happen if it were taken incorrectly (Klagsbrun 38-9). When Freud first heard of cocaine he thought that it sounded great and that he should try it himself to see how it worked. The most important lesson that Bruke taught Freud was to seek scientific truth for himself and not for fame (Klagsbrun 5). Despite the criticism, Freud took matters into his own hands and was determined to present his case again, and again.
