The issue of gay marriage and partnership recognition is currently a “hot topic” in the United States not only among the gay and lesbian community but also those who oppose the topic. Massachusetts is currently the only state that allows gay marriage and thousands of gay and lesbian couples want their unions legalized. Each state continues to possess their own views on the status of homosexual marriage. Same-sex couples want society to recognize their commitment to each other as we do heterosexual couples. They also want the same benefits that married couples receive such as Social Security benefits, pension benefits, health insurance, and they want to be able to be regarded the spouse of the other. Many problems arise for the couples who are not considered legal spouses. They cannot make any decision on their partners’ behalf in a medical situation, and are unable to visit them in the hospital or nursing facility. Stoddard’s main claim in his article is that gay marriages should be made legal. Without those facts it seems like she’s preaching her own personal beliefs. an and a woman, and it would threaten the sole purpose of family. She later expresses that our society is “struggling to recover from 30 years of weakened norms and broken families, which contradicts her earlier statement. His article seems to be a bit scattered. In her writing she jumps to and from a variety of subjects, which makes it hard to follow. She supports this claim with statements about society having no concern with homosexual relationships and most childless marriages. One of the women was seriously injured in a car accident and needed constant care. He wrote about the women and then moved on to legal issues and then spoke about the women and the fact that they suffered directly due to these prejudices, then referred back to the legal issues again.
