The Library

             Tucked away in the folds of the library is a tiny room forgotten by the visitors that browse the shelves. The sign painstakingly secured above the entrance way reads, "Special Collections: Here." But located just to the left of the doorway hangs a second sign, slightly off centered and dusty with age that reads instead "The Rare Book Room." The door, slightly ajar, creeks as you open it to reveal a small musty room, teeming with the odors of leather binding and ancient parchment pages.
             As you ease yourself forward you can not help but notice the furniture. The walls are ornatley furnished with tall colnial bookshelves and small bookstands. The light pouring through the two small windows is filtered by a pair of long brightly stained panes reflecting their colored light across the large tables and chairs, whose style reeks of the 1960's.
             Positioned at her desk at the end of the room is Carol M, a librarian who has been part of the "Rare Book Room" since 1986. She stands to greet every curious mind with enthusiasm, a smile, and pen and paper.
             "Write your name on this card," Carol says, "this is a one time card that we keep on file, then write the call number of the book you want on this card and we will see what we can do." Then like a machine she bustles around methodically, cleaning and dusting the tables and shelves. Special Collections, or the Rare Book Room, specializes in the odd. The variety of books contained in this one room range from a two inch copy of Alice in Wonderland to a single page of The Gutenburg Bible, one of the first books ever printed on a printing press.
             "We specialize in the arts of the book," says Carol, "what makes the book; the binding, the paper, anything that makes it special, or different. We have books bound in sandpaper, or maybe just books that we tired of living the 'shelf' life." And that i...
