A Separate Peace
There is great controversy among critics of the novel A Separate Peace. Many believe that the book is not appropriate for younger children because of the pessimistic themes throughout the novel. Others believe that many positive lessons can also be grasped from the novel. In his criticism Donald Barr asked "Should we invite them to contemplate the dark forces brooding over the tortured world of adolescence?" Although his question is perfectly legitimate, he is not addressing the fact that John Knowles also shed light on the more positive aspects of life. It's these positive aspects that balance out the cold, hard truth and make this novel appropriate for all ages. "For everything evil there lies something pure." Without Finny as an anchor, Gene does not exist. It describes that good can't exist without evil. This depicts the reality and illusion of war. From their relationship, not only can one learn that it is necessary to live a well-balanced life, but it's also shown that although the future matters, everyone must seize the moment and live for the day. The white spot in the darkened section represents the good in evil; the black spot in the white represents the evil in good. Another vital theme that John Knowles portrays in his novel is that in order to lead a successful life, one must maintain a healthy balance between realism and idealism. Along with Finny, half of Gene died, too. The relationship between Phinaes and Gene proves this point. "So the war swept over like a wave at the seashore, gathering power and size as it bore on us, overwhelming in its rush, seemingly inescapable, and then at the last moment eluded by a word from Phinaes; I had simply ducked, that was all, and the wave's concentrated power had hurtled harmlessly overhead, no doubt throwing others roughly up on the beach, but leaving me peaceably treading water as before" (Knowles 109). These themes make the novel a twist between evil and purity, good and bad, and realism and idealism, proving that it is an appropriate story for any age. The second, the Nagumsett, is described as being ugly and muddy-the complete antithesis of the first. Neither of these can exist without the other. I felt that I was not, never had been and never would be a living part of this overpoweringly solid and deeply meaningful world around me" (Knowles 186). On the other hand, Gene lived life in the opposite way.
