The Puritans and their influences in American Literature

             The history of Puritan begins when a group of English nonconformists migrated to Holland in their way to search for religious freedom. It was the first stem of William Bradford when he joined them and found out that he was dissatisfied with the lack of economic opportunity and organized an expedition to the New World. Besides that, they want to be left alone and live in their own pure and righteous way as well as to draw others by the example of their prosperity - not necessarily to go and conquer the world (like what other English people did).
             Under the Bradford's headship, about a hundred pilgrims leave Plymouth, England on the Mayflower to set the first colony in the Northern Parts of Virginia. The Mayflower compact, signed during the journey as the first notable document of American political history.
             The terms Puritan first began as a taunt or insult that are applied by the traditional Anglicans to those who criticized or wished to purify the Church of England. They were the people that were composed of the same strong, independent class of thoughtful, high minded who followed the pilgrims within the next few year. Many of them had been educated in the universities, and brought the reverence for education with them to the people of America.
             A thousand of Puritans under the Governor John Winthrop came down to America and the Massachusetts Bay Colony was begun in 1630. The Puritans brought strong religious impulses in all colonies north Virginia.
             The Puritans valued a piece of literary work through it 'usefulness'. Their definition of a good writing is that, it must provides a full understanding on the importance of worshipping God plus the spiritual dangers that the soul faced on Earth. Due to their firm believes in the concept of Original Sin and predestination, they appear to capture a broad view at mankind as innately sinful and God will only "saves" those he wishes for the salvation.
