Caesar

Caesar was often overlooked by many as a possible threat or future conqueror. Even as a mere boy he presented himself to the people as a possible candidate for priesthood. Sulla not blinded with Caesars age, discussed the question of whether or not to have him put to death. The advisors of the time found it absurd and felt there was no point in killing a boy like him. Sulla replied, "That they must be lacking in intelligence if they did not see that in this boy there were many Mariuses." This was an opportunity that would not be abundant in nature but would linger on to haunt those not favoring Caesars views or actions. From a very young age Caesar demonstrated immeasurable courage and lack of fear of death. He was captured near the island of Pharmacusa by some of the pirates who controlled the sea. His actions and emotions were filled with disregard, and only took control of his situation as a prisoner and turned himself into their leader. As soon as he was set free, he manned some ships, captured and imprisoned the pirates, then took the pirates out of prison and crucified them. This was just an example of the characteristic and capabilities that Caesar would be inclined to pursue.

"He thought of the sufferings which his crossing of the river would bring upon mankind and he imagined the fame of the story of it which they would leave to posterity. Once Caesar heard of this he had a guard kill Pothinus in a banquet hall. " Caesars battle against Pompey was summarized best when Plutarch quoted Caesar saying, "Today the enemy would have won, if they had a commander who was a winner. " Caesars new threat had become Pothinus, Pompey's killer. "Don't you think that I have something worth being sorry about, when I reflect at my age Alexander was already king over so many peoples, while I have never yet achieved anything really remarkable," questioned Caesar. As Caesar entered the senate house he was approached by all and followed to his seat. Even after his horrific murder and everyone's participation Caesar was still to be worshipped as a God and that there should be no alteration made. Brutus his second heir to his will and good friend was amongst the many plotting against Caesar and his last days alive. Caesars legacy was best concluded when Plutarch said, "as for the supreme power which he had pursued during the whole course of his life throughout such dangers and which at last and with such difficulty he had achieved, the only fruit he reaped from it was an empty name and a glory which made him envied by his fellow-citizens. All who were in the conspiracy bared their daggers and hemmed Caesar in on every side. The wars that were to follow would "prove him to be as good a soldier and a commander as any of those who have been most admired for their leadership and shown themselves to be the greatest generals," as mentioned by Plutarch. " To commemorate his victory, Caesar gave the people of Thessaly their freedom. Plutarch stated that in jus ten years, Caesar had "stormed more than eight hundred cities, subdued three hundred nations, and fought pitched battles at various times with three million men, of whom he destroyed one million in the actual fighting and took another million prisoners. He furthered his contribution to the citizens and "wrote to his friends in Rome to say that, of all the results of his victory, what gave him the most pleasure was that he was so often able to save the lives of fellow citizens who had fought against him.
