Sustinence of a Being

             Cruelness is what we try to avoid for our own sake of well being. Unfortunately our lives are somewhat in other people's hands where one has a choice to make another feel small, and incompetent, making our "well being" topple from icy hands that grip our heart. With every beat it shivers, taking our warmth, and kindness. In the novels Farewell To Manzanar, As I Lay Dying, Grapes Of Wrath, The Scarlet Letter, Black Boy, The Joy Luck Club, The Catcher In the Rye, Ellen Foster, Huckleberry Finn, and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings cold heartedness could not be avoided, and instead, affected the lives whom those fell victim to.
             There are those who are oppressed by society because of their appearance, yet sometimes, society accepts people into their views based on looks, achieving artificial recognition. In Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston's Farewell To Manzanar, Jeanne wants to find love and acceptance from Americans, a boyfriend to love, and to feel pretty and feminine. Although Jeanne "still had a Japanese father and a Japanese face to thwart [her] social goals," (Houston 167) she relied on "looks" to get attention only finding fake affection. It's hard on a person when they realize that their friends only like them because they're pretty, rich, or have some materialistic "treasure." What if that "treasure" becomes old? The presumable friends get caught in a new fad and move on leaving the person alone. Society's ignorance cannot recognize affection, becoming un-caring beings and although ignorant people are cruel unknowingly, they are also weak, letting the sly use them as they please.
