Gandhi (the Movie) Biography

"No man's life can be encompassed in one telling. There is no way to give each year its allotted weight, to include each event, each person who helped to shape a lifetime. What can be done is to be faithful in spirit to the record and try to find one's way to the heart of the man..."As this quote so began the movie "Gandhi", so too will it begin my paper. This movie portrayed Gandhi not just as a hero, but also as a human. His life was indeed hard, and through various moments of the movie, I cringed at the cruelty he and his people endured. Gandhi was but one man, yet he displayed not only the power of the Indian people, but also the power of peace. During Gandhi's visit to South Africa, he was astonished at the way Indians were treated. They were not allowed to ride first/second class on the train, and they weren't ever allowed to walk on the same pavement that the white British men walked upon. About five minutes after the opening shot of the movie, it shows Gandhi on a first class car encountering his first taste of social injustice in South Africa (and maybe even his life). Outraged at this incident, he began his campaign for change.

Salt was on par with the likes of food and water. Soon after, fights erupted and death in the millions occurred all over the newly formed India. The other incident that "an eye for an eye" caused great pain was the scene where it showed the Muslims and Hindus walking in opposite paths down a dirt path. He knew that in order for India to be free, all would have to join in the 'cause. He knew India would not gain independence by just talking with fellow lawyers and the middle/upper-class. He also demonstrated numerous symbolic marches: most notably his march to the sea. Another one of Gandhi's sayings was "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind". At that time, it was illegal for anyone to make his or her own salt. He called for an equal India to stand up to Britain. At first, the crowd was pretty much ignoring him. He said poverty was the worst kind of violence. In scenes throughout the movie, clips of the lower-class people (untouchables) were shown. The way he kept picking up and burning those passes hit after hit moved not only myself, but also the country of Britain. Instead, he helped them when they needed help.
